RESPECTFUL COMMUNICATION

How to disagree without becoming enemies.

Civil conversation does not require either person to abandon their beliefs. The primary goal should be to understand the other person accurately, to explain your own view thoughtfully, and to end the conversation with respect for our freedom to think, speak, and believe differently.

1. Begin with curiosity.Ask what experiences or values helped shape the other person's view.
2. Listen to understand.Make sure you understand the other person before responding.
3. Speak for yourself.Speak from your own experience and avoid assigning labels to the other person.
4. Find the point of agreement.Even when conclusions differ, identify a value or goal you share.
5. End with respect. You do not have to change anyone's mind. Conversations can end with recognition of why you disagree.
